As I lay sick on the couch today, it was difficult to muster up energy to entertain John Paul with books, toys, smiles, and laughs to distract him from his newest obsession: the DVD player. Despite a strategically placed ottoman and my admittedly half-hearted attempts at distraction, John Paul could not be deterred from his newfound love.
He wasn’t successful on his first try, or on his fortieth, but you can bet he’ll try again tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that, until he reaches the beautiful, glowing, green lights of the DVD player. And as I watched him try and try again today, I couldn’t help but smile, partially because of his cuteness (those thighs-come on!), and partially because it continues to amaze me how much this little man is teaching me.
A few days ago, I gave voice to my dreams under a star-lit sky. But, I still have so many fears. I still have so many doubts. I still hear so many voices in my head telling me that I shouldn’t even try to reach my dreams because I’ll probably just fail. And yet, I’m learning every day I spend with John Paul about going after what I want and facing my fears with passion, confidence, and perseverance.
I pray that God gives me the strength to learn from my son and to go after my dreams the same way John Paul approaches his, simple as they might be. I pray that God gives me the wisdom to discern which dreams will bring me and others happiness and closer to Him, and which dreams will not. I pray that God gives me courage to follow Him in all the ways He is calling me. And above all else, I pray that God gives me clarity, and makes my desires and dreams for myself smaller, and His dreams and desires for me clearer.
My prayer for you today is exactly the same as my prayer for myself. May God grant you strength, wisdom, courage, and clarity.
